Description
This is a greatly enlarged heart (weight 740g) showing concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle;
the intraventricular septum is protruding into the right ventricular cavity. The heart valves appear
normal.
History
This man suffered from chronic renal failure due to glomerulonephritis. This was initially
treated by dialysis and subsequently by renal transplantation. A renal transplant was carried out on
9th July 1977. His immediate post-operative condition was satisfactory, but the kidney failed to
function soon after and a diagnosis of post-transplant acute tubular necrosis was made. On the
seventh post-operative day he became hypertensive on dialysis; he then became severely shocked,
and died. At autopsy the native kidneys were granular and contracted, together weighing 200g.
